What to Pack?

How much can I bring?

Great North Fishing Company uses the services of NDK Air, who diligently follow the Transport Canada guidelines for weight and balance on board their float planes.

We ask that you do not pack anymore the 125lbs (56.7 kg) of gear per person. If you would like to bring a heavier load, please let us know in advance and we can arrange to transport the extra baggage at an additional cost. This may include organizing a separate charter flight.

What should I bring?

Our cabin on Sims Lake is equipped with a full kitchen that includes a propane fridge and freezer, cooking utensils (including pots and pans) propane oven with a 4 burner stove top.

We reccomend that you bring the following with you:

  • First aid and flashlight.
  • Bottled water
  • GPS
  • Matches
  • Bug spray
  • Toilet paper
  • Sunscreen & Toiletries
  • Sleeping bag & pillow
  • Towels
  • Fishing equipment
  • Hand and dish soap
  • Rain and cold weather gear. (It can get cold unexpectedly)
  • Life jacket

Keep in mind that while there is running water at the camp it is not potable. So we ask that you ensure you have enough bottles water to last you for the duration of the trip. Please let us know if you would like assistance arranging this in advance.

We also provide propane BBQ, 4 14' Naden boats, 4 stroke 9.9 yamaha motors and gasoline.

Food, drink and alcohol can be purchased locally in Thunder Bay.

Flights

Flights to our wilderness camps are operated by NDK Air Ltd. Each flight departs from the NDK Air base on Mackenzie Lake Road in the town of Armstrong Station, Ontario. Depending on the size of your group and the weight of your baggage, your flight will take place on one of NDK Air's two regularly-maintained floatplanes.

NDK Air's beautiful Turbine Otter can carry up to 9 passengers and a useful load of up to 3,000 lbs. The engine is a Walter M601 turbine engine, converted from its original 600Hp Pratt & Whitney R-1340-S1H1-G Wasp Radial engine in early 2006.

Built in 1951, NDK Air's Piston Beaver is as classic as Canadian floatplanes get. It can carry up to 4 passengers with a useful load of up to 1,300 lbs. The engine is a 450Hp Pratt & Whitney R-985 Wasp Junior Radial engine.
